AB-PAS staining combines the characteristics of Alcian Blue and PAS staining. It oxidizes carbohydrates with periodic acid to generate aldehydes, which then react with Schiff reagent to show a purple-red color; Alcian Blue stains acidic mucopolysaccharides blue. This method is used to simultaneously detect acidic mucopolysaccharides (such as cartilage and mucus) and neutral carbohydrates (such as glycogen).
