TPO (Thyroid peroxidase) is synthesized by thyroid follicular cells and is located on the apical free surface of thyroid epithelial cells. It directly participates in the oxidation of iodine, iodination of tyrosine, and coupling of iodinated tyrosine within thyroid cells. It is a key enzyme in the synthesis of thyroid hormones. TPO is highly expressed in normal, hyperplastic, and most benign thyroid tumor tissues, but its expression is significantly reduced in malignant thyroid tumors. It can be used for the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant thyroid tumors.
