p40 (△Np63) is a subtype of the p63 protein, expressed in squamous epithelial cells, urothelial cells, basal cells of the prostate, myoepithelial cells of the breast and salivary glands, and thymic epithelial cells. It has high sensitivity similar to p63 in lung squamous cell carcinoma but is rarely expressed in lung adenocarcinoma, whereas p63 can be expressed in some lung adenocarcinomas. Therefore, p40 has higher specificity than p63 and is recommended for the differential diagnosis of lung squamous cell carcinoma and lung adenocarcinoma.
