AMACR/p504s (α-Methylacyl-CoA racemase) is located in the peroxisomes and mitochondria of cells, primarily involved in the β-oxidation metabolism of branched-chain fatty acids and their derivatives, as well as the biosynthesis of bile acids. It is present in tissues such as the liver, kidney, and pancreas. AMACR/p504s shows positive expression in prostate cancer and high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN), but may exhibit negative or low-level expression in normal prostate and benign prostatic hyperplasia. It is often used in combination with CK5/6 (or 34βE12) and p63 for the study of prostate tumors.
