Lambda can mark B cells and plasma cells with λ light chains, and extracellular immunoglobulins can also be expressed. It is mainly used as an auxiliary diagnosis for leukemia, plasma cells, and some non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Studies suggest that a common feature of these tumors is the expression of a single light chain limited to either κ light chain or λ light chain. The combined use of κ light chain and λ light chain, where one light chain is much more abundant than the other, indicates monoclonal proliferation and is used for the differential diagnosis of lymphoma and lymphoid reactive hyperplasia.
