CD19 is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily and contains two immunoglobulin-like domains. In the lymphohematopoietic system, it is a single-chain glycoprotein expressed on the surface of lymphocytes and follicular dendritic cells. It plays an important regulatory role in the development, activation, and differentiation stages of B lymphocytes. CD19 is expressed on the membrane surface from pro-B cells to mature B cells but is not expressed in plasma cells, T cells, or normal granulocytes. It can be used for the diagnosis of B cell tumors and is more sensitive than CD20; plasma cell CD19 negativity suggests neoplastic proliferation.
