CD31 antigen (PECAM-1) is a 130-140kD single-chain transmembrane glycoprotein, mainly expressed on platelets, granulocytes, B lymphocytes, monocytes, vascular endothelial cells, some plasma cells, sinusoidal endothelial cells of the liver, megakaryocytes, and others. It is often used in the study of angiogenesis in tumor stroma.
Its primary application is in the diagnosis of vascular tumors (such as epithelioid hemangioendothelioma and Kaposi's sarcoma), with specificity superior to CD34. CD31 is positively expressed in hemangioendothelioma, serving as a specific marker; whereas it is negatively expressed in angiosarcoma. It can be used as an auxiliary test in acute monocytic leukemia and abnormal and micromonocytic cells in bone marrow. CD31 is positive in some lymphomas, occasionally positive in PNET, and rarely positive in carcinomas and mesotheliomas.
