The exact role of Beta-catenin in humans is not yet fully understood, but it appears in the tissue architecture and polarity formation of some tissues. Beta-catenin is a component of adhesion molecule complexes, functioning in multiprotein complexes that support Ca2+-dependent cell-to-cell adhesion, and it is also a critical molecule for cell adhesion itself, as well as playing roles in signal transduction and anchoring the actin cytoskeleton.
In breast tumors, Beta-catenin shows membranous expression in ductal carcinoma, while in lobular carcinoma, Beta-catenin is expressed in the cytoplasm.
In many stromal tumors, Beta-catenin shows strong nuclear positivity, such as in fibromatosis, solitary fibrous tumors, synovial sarcoma, endometrial stromal sarcoma, and carcinosarcoma. Additionally, Beta-catenin is nuclear positive in hepatocellular carcinoma and solid pseudopapillary tumors of the pancreas.
