NeuN (Neuron-specific nuclear protein) is a neuronal protein expressed in neurons of the central nervous system (including neurons from the cerebellum, cerebral cortex, hippocampus, thalamus, and spinal cord) and neurons of the peripheral nervous system (including neurons from the spinal ganglia, sympathetic ganglia, and enteric plexus). Purkinje cells do not express NeuN. Typically, NeuN immunoreactivity can only be briefly observed during the mitotic anaphase of neuronal cells and is not expressed during the cell proliferation phase. It is used to identify neuronal cells and for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of neuronal tumors.
