NF (Neurofilament) is a neuron-specific intermediate filament protein, composed of a polymer of three subunits with different molecular weights, distributed in varying proportions in the central and peripheral neurons as well as tumors. It is positively expressed in tumors such as ganglioneuroma, paraganglioma, cerebellar or peripheral neuroblastoma, adrenal tumor, or peripheral pheochromocytoma. It is mainly used for the diagnosis of neuroblastoma and pheochromocytoma, and can also assist in the diagnosis of Merkel cell carcinoma.
