Monosialyl ganglioside, a tumor-associated cell surface glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 210KD, is related to the Lewis A blood group antigen. It is expressed in breast ductal epithelium, kidney, salivary and sweat glands, lung and intestinal epithelium, pancreatic acinar and ductal epithelium, biliary epithelium, and prostatic ductal epithelium.
Gastrointestinal adenocarcinomas, such as those of the stomach, intestine, and pancreas, show strong positive expression. It is used for the differential diagnosis of metastatic adenocarcinoma, though its specificity is not high; it also aids in differentiating adenocarcinoma from mesothelioma.
