Pax-2 (Paired box gene 2) is a member of the Pax nuclear transcription factor family, located at chromosome 10q22.1-q24.3. It is involved in regulating cell proliferation and growth, inhibiting apoptosis, and inducing tumor formation. Pax-2 is a transcription factor crucial for the development and formation of the urogenital system. During the development of the urogenital system, Pax-2 is widely expressed in renal tubules, renal parenchymal cells, mesonephric tubules, epithelial cells of the ovary and fallopian tubes, and the endometrium. Positive expression can be observed in tumors of the kidney, ovary, and uterus, especially with high expression in renal clear cell carcinoma, endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the uterus, and ovarian serous carcinoma. It shows low expression in renal papillary carcinoma and chromophobe renal cell carcinoma, and is negative in bladder urothelial carcinoma and breast cancer. Combined use with RCC, CD10, CD117, and Ep-CAM is applied for the classification of renal cell tumors. It can be used for differential diagnosis between metastatic hepatic renal clear cell carcinoma and primary hepatic clear cell carcinoma, as well as between ovarian serous papillary carcinoma and metastatic breast carcinoma to the ovary.
