Caldesmon is a binding protein of smooth muscle actin and calmodulin, a cytoskeleton-associated protein present in thin filaments (smooth muscle and striated muscle). It regulates the interaction between actin and myosin and exists in two forms: low molecular weight (l-Caldesmon) and high molecular weight (h-Caldesmon). The latter is believed to be present only in visceral and vascular smooth muscle and myoepithelium.
