MUM1 (Multiple myeloma oncogene 1; also known as Interferon regulatory factor 4) is a 50kDa protein that serves as a nuclear transcription factor essential for the development and activation of B lymphocytes. It regulates B cell proliferation and differentiation and activates T cells. It is expressed in the late stages of B cell differentiation into plasma cells and in activated T cells. Positive expression is observed in multiple myeloma, lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, peripheral T-cell lymphoma, and classical Hodgkin lymphoma. It can be used as a marker for the immunophenotyping of malignant lymphomas and is exclusively expressed in lymphocytes and melanocytes. It is mainly used for the classification and differentiation of malignant lymphomas.
