The BRCA-1 gene encodes a nuclear phosphoprotein that maintains chromosomal stability and acts as a tumor suppressor gene. The normal BRCA-1 gene is involved in DNA repair. If this gene mutates, the repair function is lost, leading to more DNA replication errors and tumor proliferation. Current research indicates that BRCA-1 plays an unknown protective role within cells, as it is highly expressed in rapidly proliferating and differentiating epithelial cells. Further studies show that the complete loss of BRCA-1 nuclear expression in breast cancer is associated with poor prognosis, suggesting that changes in the BRCA-1 phenotype could provide a new prognostic parameter for breast cancer. Additionally, research on BRCA-1 mutations may serve as a potential rapid screening technique. Studies have confirmed the clear relationship between BRCA-1 gene mutations and familial breast cancer, with approximately 40%-50% of hereditary breast cancers caused by BRCA-1 mutations.
