AFP (Alpha-fetoprotein) is a marker related to embryonic development, initially discovered in high concentrations in human fetal serum. AFP functions in transporting and binding ligands, regulating embryonic development, and immune modulation. In adults, AFP expression is often associated with liver cancer and teratomas, but some individuals may have hereditary expression without specific pathological features; meanwhile, AFP has prognostic value for advanced gastric cancer. AFP can serve as a specific marker for liver cancer, but its sensitivity is much lower than other liver cancer markers.
