SMA (Alpha Smooth Muscle Actin, a-smooth muscle actin) is involved in cell movement (contraction) and differs from β- and γ-actin that maintain the cytoskeleton, thus it does not cross-react with these two subunits. SMA expression is observed in smooth muscle and myofibroblasts in normal, reactive, or tumorous tissues; in myoepithelial cells of normal, tumorous, or diseased breast, sweat gland, and salivary gland tissues; it assists in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of various tumors (such as adenoid cystic carcinoma, hemangioma, etc.). Normal myocardium, skeletal muscle, and basal cells of the prostate do not express SMA.
