CD34 is a single-chain transmembrane protein with a molecular weight of 110 kDa. It is mainly expressed in immature hematopoietic stem cells, myeloid cells, and vascular endothelial cells. It can identify endothelial cell differentiation, but its sensitivity in recognizing blood vessels is not related to tumor grading. More than 85% of angiosarcomas and Kaposi's sarcomas show positive CD34 expression; it can be used in the study of angiogenesis in tumor stroma; combined with CD117, it is used in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal stromal tumors. Additionally, CD34 can be specifically expressed in renal cancer, thyroid cancer, clear cell carcinoma, and melanoma.
It can be used for differential diagnosis of the following tumors:
(1) Solitary fibrous tumor and sarcomatoid mesothelioma;
(2) Pseudopapillary skin fibrosarcoma and benign fibrous histiocytoma.
