WT1 (Wilm's tumor 1) is a zinc finger-like transcription factor with a molecular weight of 52~54 kDa, located on chromosome 11p13. It plays an important role in the development of the kidney and reproductive organs. In normal epithelial cells, it is mainly expressed in the surface epithelial cells of the ovary and fallopian tube, while it is negative in the endometrial or cervical epithelial cells; in non-epithelial cells, it is expressed in mesothelial cells, stromal cells of the female reproductive tract, non-germ cells of the testis, kidney (podocytes), CD34+ bone marrow stem cells, and fetal spleen cells. It is positively expressed in Wilms tumor, ovarian serous carcinoma, mesonephric adenoma, mesothelioma, colon cancer, connective tissue-promoting small round cell tumors, and leukemia; whereas uterine serous carcinoma, Ewing's sarcoma, and primitive neuroectodermal tumors are negative. It can be used for the differential diagnosis of some small round cell tumors.
