CK5/6 (Cytokeratin 5/6) has molecular weights of 56kDa and 58kDa. It is expressed in basal and spinous cells of the skin, basal cells of the prostate, and squamous epithelial cells, but not in other single-layer glandular epithelial cells. It can be used for differential diagnosis between squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, as well as between mesothelioma and adenocarcinoma. It is also used as an auxiliary diagnostic marker for basal-like breast cancer. Combined with p63 and AMACR/p504s, it assists in the diagnosis of benign and malignant prostate lesions.
