Pax-5 (Paired box gene 5) is a member of the Pax nuclear transcription factor family, located on chromosome 9p13, encoding the B cell-specific activator protein (BSAP). During the early development stage of B cells, Pax-5 can influence the expression of B cell-specific genes such as CD19 and CD20. This protein plays an important role in the development of B cells and neurons. It is mainly expressed in the nuclei of pro-B cells and mature B cells, but not expressed in plasma cells; positive expression is observed in classical Hodgkin lymphoma and nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma; positive expression is also seen in Merkel cell carcinoma and small cell carcinoma; plasma cell tumors, multiple myeloma, plasmablastic lymphoma, as well as T cell and T cell-derived tumors are usually negative. It is mainly used for the diagnosis of B cell and B cell-derived tumors.
