VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) is a heparin-binding growth factor specific to vascular endothelial cells. It can induce angiogenesis in the body and is a highly conserved homodimeric glycoprotein. It is widely distributed in human and animal tissues such as the brain, liver, kidneys, spleen, lungs, and bones. VEGF participates in normal embryonic development, follicle maturation, and physiological regulation of the kidneys. It specifically binds to a particular combination of three "vascular endothelial growth factor receptors" (VEGFR-1, -2, -3), acting on vascular endothelial cells to promote their proliferation and increase vascular permeability. VEGF plays an important role in blood vessel formation in tumor tissues and is closely related to tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis. The expression level of VEGF is positively correlated with vascular growth within tumors and the risk of tumor metastasis. It is mainly used in research on various tumors.
