Relevant markers for human ovarian malignant tumors are not expressed in normal ovaries, but this antigen is present in ovaries during menstruation and pregnancy. Serological tests are widely used for the detection of ovarian cancer, and it is encoded by the MUC16 gene. 79% of ovarian cancers express this antigen, which is used in combination with other antibodies for differential diagnosis of metastatic cancer. Almost all ovarian serous adenocarcinomas test positive, while mucinous tumors are negative or weakly expressed. Colon cancer, breast cancer, uterine adenomyoma, and lung bronchioloalveolar carcinoma may also express it.
