The c-Myc protein is a multifunctional nuclear phosphoprotein involved in cell cycle progression, apoptosis, and cell transformation. The c-Myc gene is an oncogene expressed in various cell types; proliferative cells and various tumor cells often show increased expression. Mutations, amplification, rearrangement, and translocation of the c-Myc gene are associated with multiple hematopoietic tumors, leukemia, lymphoma, glioma, and various cancers (such as thyroid, breast, and endometrial cancers).
Amplification is present in 20-30% of breast cancer cases and is related to HER-2 amplification and prognosis. Positive expression is observed in Burkitt lymphoma and many AIDS-related lymphomas. It is mainly used in tumor research. When immunohistochemistry detects c-Myc overexpression (>40%), it can be used for screening and predicting c-Myc rearrangement.
