SALL4 (Sal-like protein 4) is a zinc finger protein transcription factor located on chromosome 20q13. Its gene is responsible for regulating the pluripotency and self-renewal of embryonic stem cells and is a key gene in many tumors. SALL4 is involved in regulating cell proliferation, migration, and invasion abilities, mediating tumor cell chemoresistance, and maintaining tumor stem cell characteristics. It is expressed in stem cells and fetal intestinal cells and shows positive expression in tumors such as testicular seminoma, embryonal carcinoma, yolk sac tumor, ovarian germ cell tumor, liver cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, endometrial cancer, and teratoma. High expression of SALL4 in tumor tissues is significantly associated with poor prognosis in tumor patients and may serve as a marker for early tumor diagnosis, prognosis assessment, and treatment monitoring. It is mainly used for the diagnosis of germ cell tumors and can also serve as an independent prognostic factor for survival and recurrence in liver cancer patients.
