Nestin is a type VI intermediate filament protein with a molecular weight of 200kDa, expressed in neuroepithelial stem cells and endothelial cells during early embryonic development. It can identify the most primitive neuroepithelium as well as other embryonic tissues, so it is not specific to the central nervous system. It is positively expressed in almost all gliomas and melanomas (both primary and metastatic melanomas). It can serve as a marker for stem/progenitor cells, neuroglial cells, and endothelial tumor cells, and can also be used for the differential diagnosis of gastrointestinal stromal tumors and leiomyomas.
